AI Chatbots (and permissions confusion) on phpBB.com

Post by Dimetrodon »

I have this as a separate topic as things can easily get lost if everything is confined to a single topic. :)

AI opened my eyes to a simple fact that made me crazy all of this time and made me confused more and more

I thought that as I am admin naturally all forums even those that have not been set permissions are supposed to be visible to me
not knowing that still as admin I have to give permission to me as admin

Well done AI chat bot.
Darakhshan accusing members of the team (and possibly members of the community?) of being AI chat bots.

To be honest, I also would think a founder would have access to everything if I was new to phpBB (or just unfamiliar with phpBB3) as well. It's noteworthy because the post mentions phpBB2 being better in that regard.

Also, the team... well... keep repeating the same thing.

I remember version 2.. and i agree, it was a lot more simple than it is now. Since 3.0.. permission system was changed.
I guess what he meant by AI.. was that he used CHAT GPT to get answers about phpbb.

Yeah, maybe I misread the post. Still says a lot about many on .com if chatGPT offers better support of course.

As i see it.. supporting 3.2 already tells us a lot.. not to mention minimum php version.
I'm not sure how smart AI is about phpBB as i haven't played enough with it, but maybe it has some answers.

I'm already thinking about custom update for 3.3 branch.

Such a fork would be neat. I'm sure its updated dependencies (sorry if that's the wrong word) would make it more up to date than the teams version.

Do you need anything from me? I'm a novice, but I would do what I can.

Yes.. dependencies - symfony components & twig.. Maybe i would add even mentions.
I want to use php8 route attributes.. but i'm not sure that i can achieve it without complications on default 3.3 branch.

It's easy to do.. I would just use github desktop to compare & merge what is needed & then composer would do its part.
Currently it's a thought, but i may do it.. Helping to test the outcome would be nice.

Understood, I’ll soon setup a subdirectory for a test install when I get home. ;)

Ganstaz/ (Currently empty folder)

If you plan to go through with it, should I download it from GitHub, install it, have you register, and I give you founder access? Or I just give you the founder account's credentials?

While I do trust you, I don't think I want to hand out server credentials.

It's an easy task.. same as full package update/upgrade, but no db update. Maybe it will be as new installation. We shall see.
Yes.. i will upload it to github.
Only thing that differs.. is to run composer install to install dependencies, other than that it's a simple process.

To make life easier.. you can install composer on your local comp. It wont take a lot of time + installing dependencies is very easy.

I understand. Composer has been installed on the server. That was painless. :D

Composer version 2.5.4 2023-02-15 13:10:06
