Area51 phpBB Forum

Post by Dimetrodon »

https://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/

Honestly, the forum at area51 is just a honeypot for spammers at this point, considering that all the new accounts only existed to lost spam links in their signatures. Looking at the older topics, during the phpBB 3.0.x days it was very active. Now, it's pretty much just an archive.

Even the discord is more active than that, and practically nothing is there.

Well.. i think we have discussed this topic before.. biggest issue with inactivity is attitude & no info about the future.
Maybe people would contribute more if there was a real vision about phpbb4.
As i said some time ago.. current structure needs to be destroyed for a new one to take its place.

area51 lost its development discussion purpose a long time ago (we can say it was replaced by ideas forum & discord).. as an archive & test forum it's ok.

You're right, we have.

I just made that comment due to the spam that gets posted there, which I think is pathetic.

Sorry, I didn't mean to repeat myself. It's more like a general Area51 topic in case something interesting happens in the future.

Discussing something again is not an issue.. specially if we look at it from another angle)

I guess by spam you mean those hidden links & so called sarcastic posts about phpbb4 test version.
Sometimes i read those old topics.. just to see what has changed.. I mean psychological part of it)

Exactly, those vague "I tested the RC and it works" or "I'm looking forward to phpBB4" and there is an SEO link in the signature hidden behind some periods. If I was a spammer, I would absolutely love area51, since no one bothers to moderate it all that much.

Then they spam in their signature.

Well.. theoretically they can release new major version (i would go with 3.4 branch).. it would reduce sarcasm by some amount.
I guess the spam is not a very huge issue at the moment, because that site is not popular anymore.

It can be kept as testing ground.. that way at least some positive value will remain. Of course archive has its own value as well.

I feel like phpbb.com as a whole is becoming a shadow of itself, version 4 is struggling to grow and some extension developers are leaving.

Yeah, honestly, I doubt there will even be a phpBB4 that gets released, or even a phpBB 3.4

And yeah, extension devs leaving doesn't help (Not that I can blame them, they're leaving due to a lack of a coherent plan from the phpBB Team and outdated dependencies). GanstaZ won't write any extensions unless it is under a newer Symphony and Twig version, and he is far from alone.

Honestly, if the phpBB 4 version of the style never sees the light of day I wouldn't mind.
